QuickTime Broadcaster (free download from Apple) is used for Audio Only and Video captures.
Data captures should be done with the H.264 codec.
QuickTime Pro ($30) is used on all the encoders to convert the captured files into different movie types.
SecuritySpy ($125 for 4 inputs) allows simultaneously capture of video, audio and data on one encoder.

Other support software

  • QTeXporter -- Free download at mac.softpedia.com (how to use instructions)
  • Fugu for transferring files
  • Remote Desktop (encoders should be set up as clients)
  • Script Editor (Applications/AppleScript)
  • TextEdit (Applications)
  • Terminal (Applications/Utilities)

Encoder Set Upencoder preferences

Each encoder needs to be set up with the following:

Energy Saver -- No Sleeping; the encoder needs to be awake and responsive.
Restarting after a power failure means less leg work in the future.

Sound -- Make sure the correct input is selected and mute the output.

Sharing -- Becuase the system is running headless, it needs to be accessible remotely.

Accounts -- Again, with a power failure the encoder should restart with proper user and software.

Time & Date -- Setting thedate automatically keeps the encoder on time.

Software Update -- While software updates are important, they tend to come up at the worst times. Update the encoders often, but manually.

How to use QTeXporter

  • Open a movie in QuickTime Pro
  • go to File, then Export
  • Choose the Export option you want to save
  • or
  • Click Options (what you choose here depends on the type of movie you want to export)
  • Open QTeXporter in the Apple Script Editor
  • click "Run"
  • Choose the type of file you want to export (usually a QuickTime movie or MPEG4)
  • Give the file an appropriate name; keep the ".qtes" extension
  • These files are automatically saved to /Library/Scripts/QuickTime Player Scripts/Export Settings Files
  • This is important when creating movie conversions that have specific settings.
