Hardware -- What we are using

Encoders --

  • Mac Mini 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo with 1GB ram ($850)

Camera --

  • Sony EVI D30 (Around $200 used from eBay)

Small Monitor for camera--

  • 5 to 13 inches with s-video or composite inputs

Data Capture --

  • epiphan system VGA2USB--VGA in, usb out ($300)

Automatic VGA Switch

  • Aten VS-201 Video Auto switch ($70)
    • ensures a constant feed from a VGA source

Analog to DV converter

  • Canopus ADVC-55 ($250)

Audio (no specifics)

  • Wireless Microphone for instructor
  • Boundary Microphone for students
  • Audio Mixer

Please note...

Most of our classrooms already contain microphones and sound systems for recording or ADA purposes. We take our audio from these sources. It requires that the instructor remember to wear (and turn on) the microphone.

Each encoder requires a static ip connection to allow for Remote Desktop control and automated transfers.

While the Sony EVI D30 has a tracking feature, it is not dependable. A student director (or volunteer) to steer the camera is preferrable.
